Three Poems by R.J. Balcomb

I Am

I am the vastness of the universe
and yet I am the smallest fly
I am ageless
I never began
and I will never end
My existence is one with the darkness
that holds all the colors of light within
I am the beginning of time
and the end of space
I am just a piece of the existence
that we all share.

A Single Candle

A single candle burns in the dark
The fire spreads
There are now two candles alight
The fire continues to spread
Many candles shine in the abyss
The fire grows
And what was once darkness
Now is blinding light
Started by a single candle

The Raven Flies

The raven flies
Flies through the night
His wings beating
Over the rooftop
Over the ally
The raven flies
Storm after storm appear in his way
Yet he still flies
Owls swoop down in the dead of night on his comrades
Yet the raven flies

Hey R.J.
Wow. Most people have a hard enough time expressing themselves one on one. You have a gift that enables you to express yourself, but in doing so, allows each person that reads your thoughts the ability to iterpret them in a way that means something personal and important to them. That is pretty cool. I hope you keep it up. Thanks for sharing.

Isn't it wonderful when the moment hits and the words flow as if we have no control over them. It is those times that we speak the clearest. Thank you for sharing.

R.J.,

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful poems. We find ourselves thinking a lot about them. You have created such powerful images that can help us interpret what has happened. Your words inspire us to think about how we are all connected in spirit, so we can never be truly separated...how one person can make such a big difference in everyone’s life...and the courage we all sometimes need to keep going. It seems to us that you have a lot of courage, as well as creative spirit... Thanks for being such an inspiration. We wish you many blessings.

Love,
The Frosts

Hi RJ,

These are beautiful poems, and they show that you have the power to express your feelings.

Night

It is a night,
a beautiful one indeed,
none will be like this,
yet some will come close,
the fireflies are out,
then death reigns,
flowers are dying,
One heart beats,
that of death,
thus, the boy departs this world,
becoming one with the night.

I've got to agree with Tom. You have a gift! Thank you for sharing your poems with all of us. They connect all of us to your mom's bright spirit in ways that we may not be able to express.

Thank you and keep it up.

Dear RJ & Jenna

You don't know me, but I knew your Mom and think she was a brilliant, caring and inspiring person. We will all miss her a lot. RJ, your poetry is very impassioned. What a gift you have. I saw this poem today, written by a child living in a concentration camp during WWII. I think it is beautiful and would be nice for you to have to reflect upon and maybe bring you comfort - from one child to another...

"Try to open up your heart
To beauty; Go to the woods someday
And weave a wreath of memory there
Then if tears obscure your way
You’ll know how wonderful it is to be alive."
